The Old Mutual National Choir Festival was on its 5th leg of vivacious singing as choir giants conquered the stage of the Mosaïek Teatro in Johannesburg on the 21st of September and battled it out for the first position.
Well known for encouraging the celebration of cultures, traditions and everyday life with voices raised in song, Old Mutual was very excited to be back in Gauteng this year as they continue their full support of the National Choir Festival, which they have now been sponsoring since 1988. This choral event has attracted 106 choirs nationwide starting with Eswatini in August, followed by Zimbabwe, Polokwane and Cape Town, unlocking true talent and diversity, truly it has been an exciting choral journey.
The day started with the Kanana Chorus in the Standard Category on stage warmly welcoming the crowd of choral music supporters and setting the tone, then the rest of the choirs followed. As Kopano Chorus took over the stage, cheers and applause came forth before their beautiful voices filled the hall. Nonhlanhla Yende (Kopano Chorus) took the Best Soloist (Mezzo-Soprano) as old-time classics, current and new songs were witnessed and enjoyed throughout the day. Voices of the Nation claimed their respective title and obtained the first position, placing them on a lead in the league.
Bandile Mngoma, the Sponsorship Manager at Old Mutual, announced that there would be no finals again this year due to lack of partner sponsors, however, that did not break the mood and atmosphere of the festival as the choirs continued with the competition. “We still encourage the support of nourishing young talent and empowering the youth despite minor setbacks. The Old Mutual National Choir Festival has been such an amazing initiative, the support has been incredible, and we look forward to shaking things up in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape and the Free State in October”, said Bandile.
Old Mutual has also increased its support and dedication in the world of music by launching AMPD Studios in Newtown Johannesburg earlier this year to amplify and mentor Africa’s young aspiring musical talents. They are also making a mark with their lifestyle-based music platforms Music at The Lake series, IDOLS SA partnership as well as the recently launched pan-African singing reality competition Amazing Voices which is currently in audition stages.
